Ski holidays in Flaine remain a popular choice for family ski holidays, and with good reason! It’s extremely accessible, nestled in the Haute Savoie region with only a 1 1/2 – 2 hours drive time from Geneva airport, and has a vast array of beginner and intermediate runs making it perfect for families and big groups of mixed ability.

Flaine is situated facing the majestic Mont Blanc at a height of 1600m with lifts reaching grand heights of 2561m. As part of the Grand Massif ski area (one of the biggest linked ski areas in France) you have over 265km of groomed piste at your disposal including the neighbouring satellite villages of Les Morillon, Samoëns, SIxt and Les Carroz. One thing that makes ski holidays in Flaine so popular with groups is the fact that Flaine is situated in a bowl; no matter which piste you decide to take, you will always end up at the same place. This means it is almost impossible to get lost and you can guarantee you’ll meet up with your friends at the bottom, it is sociable skiing at its finest.

Skiing In Avoriaz

The skiing in Flaine is all situated in a huge snowy bowl with easy wide nursery slopes in the heart of the resort for beginners. In the Grand Massif area there are over 265km of pistes which are utilised by 75 lifts. There are also some beginners lifts at the bottom of the mountain which are free to use, so total beginners won’t even need to buy a ski pass for the first day or so. Once you are ready to hit the big lifts though, you will find an abundance of easy pistes, some that run all the way from the top of the mountain. It goes without saying that you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy all that skiing that Flaine has to offer.

However, skiing in Flaine has something for everybody. If you are an intermediate or advanced skier then the huge range of cruising red runs, mogul fields and even the super taxing black runs such as Diamond Noir are sure to keep you occupied all week long.



If it’s tree runs you are after then try the wooded run that goes all the way down into the village of Samoens, or simply head off-piste into the forests and duck some branches. If you want to hit the boarder park, or perhaps try racing down the Stade red run, then head for the Aujon lift and have a go.

The resort of Flaine itself is compact and convenient. It was originally split into two levels – Flaine Forum and Flaine Forêt which are fairly close to each other and are easily accessible as they are connected by two funiculaires. More recently the accommodation in Flaine has seen the developments of other smaller areas such as Hameau de Flaine, which seems to link the two together even more.

Instead of the premium catered chalets that you see scattered across the French Alps, the majority of the accommodation in Flaine is made up of self catered apartments. The flexibility of self catering and freedom to do your own thing not only appeals hugely to families with differing schedules, but it also brings costs down dramatically when compared to other resorts. Apres Ski In Flaine

Being more of a family orientated resort, the apres ski in Flaine is not a huge focus. Although there are bars scattered throughout the resort, you are more likely to see people sitting on a comfy sofa enjoying a hot chocolate, than leaping on the tables with Jaegerbombs galore. However that is not to say there is not a party vibe; despite being a quiet resort, there’s always a party happening if you know where to look. Flaine does boast a popular nightclub, Le Caves, which stays open until 5am 7 days a week.

Le White Pub is a popular hangout for those staying in Flaine Forum, resembling a traditional English pub and serving a huge array of beers whilst often playing live music. It’s certainly the place to head if you’re looking for a dance or if your favourite team are playing, you can guarantee they’ll be playing the match.

The liveliest and most popular of Flaine’s bars has to be Le Flying Dutchman, with a huge heated terrace and a buzzing atmosphere, skiers and boarders tend to flock there from the early afternoon and party well into the evening.

But if, like many others, you are here with the family and not out for a party, why not eat out in one of Flaine’s abundance of restaurants, or check out some of the other activities on offer. Be it ice skating, swimming, tobogganing, dog sledding or even scrambling up a climbing wall, apres ski in Flaine has something to suit all tastes. If these things do not appeal to you as you are too tired after a long day on the slopes, perhaps you would enjoy a relaxing spa evening.

Transfers to Flaine

Shared Airport Transfers from Geneva airport are great value and are almost certainly the cheapest way of getting from the airport to Flaine.

Alternatively, private transfers are an option, they tend to be more expensive but you get a door to door service and there's no waiting around at the airport. For groups of 8 (which is the sweet spot for minibus transfers) it wouldn't be too different in price to shared.
