The Grandvalira ski area is impressive with 210kms of well groomed runs, which are kept open with the help of 1000+ snow cannons. At 2,080 meters, it is the highest ski resort in Andorra, this means that the snow conditions are generally good throughout the season. Snow cannons cover 65% of the runs, so, provided the weather conditions are not dangerous, you can ski every day.
There are plenty of great runs for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy. The full area ski passes give you access to the six valleys of the Grandvalira area. There are 43 blue, 30 red, 24 black and 15 green runs, as well as 3 snow parks, a boardercross track and a half pipe. These runs are spread across the resorts of Pas de la Casa, Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu and Grau Roig. Most of the runs in the resort itself are red or blue runs, which makes this a great destination for intermediate skiers or snowboarders. Those looking for black runs just need to take the lift link to Grau Roig. From there the other resorts covered by the lift pass can be reached, giving you access to even more challenging skiing, including plenty of off-piste runs. The Grandvalira lift pass now includes access to Ordino-Arcalis ski area.
The resort also caters very well for beginners. There are several large nursery slopes located right in the centre of the resort, and a choice of ski schools including one that has been voted the best in Europe. Andorra’s patient, friendly, English speaking ski instructors have a reputation for being great with kids. Understandably, most families stay on the edge of the town, so that the nightlife does not disturb the children.
Nordic skiers find Pas de la Casa as a convenient base to access the 12kms of permanent cross-country skiing tracks across the Grandvalira skiing area. The larger cross-country ski resort of Sant Julia de Loria, where there is 35kms of runs is just 15kms away. There are also four snowshoe trails, which are great fun for adult and children alike. You can also try night skiing at Pas de la Casa, twice a
week they turn on the floodlights and light up one of the gentler slopes near the edge of town.
