Ski Holidays In Chamonix

Ski holidays in Chamonix are in a class of their own. Set at the foot of Mont Blanc (the highest mountain in the Alps), the sensational off-piste heaven that is Chamonix has earnt itself the coveted title (amongst some) of ‘Capital of the Alps’.

Being a loud party town with most of its best skiing on the more difficult slopes or off-piste, ski holidays in Chamonix tend to appeal more to the adventurous or advanced skiers and are perhaps less catered towards children and young families.

Skiing In Chamonix

Chamonix is nestled in the valley at a fairly low altitude of 1040m, meaning it escapes much of the thin air and bitterly cold weather. Despite the village’s fairly low altitude, there is plenty of mountain to explore, and plenty of snow to be found. There is no need to stay low and the top lift sends you up to an altitude of 3842m which makes it the tenth highest lift in the world.

Popular for ski holidays ever since it hosted the 1924 winter Olympics, it seems to have retained much of its character and charm from this period too. Now that the town has been completely pedestrianised, it is even easier to imagine what ski holidays in Chamonix would have been like back then.

Chamonix is a beautiful and picturesque resort, with the majestic mountain of Mont Blanc towering behind and the River Arve flowing through the middle of the Belle Epoque style buildings you are sure to take some magnificent photographs.

Apres Ski in Chamonix

The off-piste here is great, not just on the slopes – but when you leave the pistes and head into town. The idyllic cafes with sun terraces overlooking the river make for some great afternoon sun-basking, whilst at the same time the multiple souvenir and high-tech winter sports gear shops entice you to get on your feet and explore. There is an open air market every Saturday morning in Chamonix offering local crafts, giving you the chance for a quick souvenir purchase before your transfer home.

On those dreaded bad weather days when the mountain isn’t calling you, there is plenty to do in the town. Chamonix has an indoor swimming pool complete with waterslides, an indoor ice rink, a casino, a cinema (with films in English) and a huge array of restaurants including 2 with Michelin stars.

The apres-ski in Chamonix is renowned amongst partygoers. The bars start pumping out the tunes just before the lifts stop running and don’t stop until the early hours of the morning. With the huge range of bars in Chamonix there really is something for every taste, The Pub offers an old English pub vibe complete with football on the TV and a range of draught beers. The Australian sports bar has every other sports game you could imagine on show. Chambre Neuf is located just opposite the train station and is a favourite for those looking to dance on the tables to live music.

When the live music wraps it’s time to head to one of Chamonix’s many nightclubs and with The Bunker and Amnesia staying open until 7am it might be a good idea to book that off-piste guide for an afternoon session, as ‘last call, first lift’ will be fairly optimistic.
