Ski Holidays In Bansko

The beautiful town of Bansko is located at the base of the Pirin Mountain, it is a popular Bulgarian ski resort that attracts all kinds of skiers. This is an ideal destination for both downhill skiers and snowboarders, with a good après ski scene.

In the past few years, millions have been invested into the resort and it is now the number one ski destination in Bulgaria. New runs are being gradually opened and the established pistes are being re-developed and upgraded.

There is a good choice of accommodation available in the area, which is all very reasonably priced. Bansko in general is a great destination for those who are skiing on a budget.

Skiing In Bansko

The season here is a long one, most years it is possible to ski right through from December to May. Ski conditions are normally very good as the resort receives heavy snow falls regularly due to it’s location. This fact and the state of the art snow cannons mean that you can enjoy the slopes most days during this period.

This resort is very much a work in progress, up until 2003/04, the only way to access the slopes was to be driven up the mountain in an all-terrain vehicle. Today, things have certainly changed. The latest lifts and gondolas now whisk you up the mountain, and new ones are still being built. New areas of the mountain are being opened up regularly and with each new season there is more to explore. One of the best things about Bansko is that there are floodlights on some of the runs, which extends the skiing day into the early evening.
Bansko is a good place to learn to ski, not only is it cheaper than alternatives but there is a dedicated area for beginners that, is largely free of through traffic. The English speaking instructors also have a reputation for being very patient and good with children.
For intermediate skiers, there are plenty of medium to difficult runs to enjoy as well as a few challenging blue runs. But, if you are an experienced skier, this may not be the right place for you. There is a black run, but it is quite short. However, you can hire a local ski guide and go off-piste, which the more experienced skier will appreciate.

If you are a snowboarder there is a good snow park, but it will not take you long to cover all of the various jumps, kickers and rails. However, this does not mean that an intermediate, or experienced snowboarder, will not be able to enjoy himself or herself in Bansko. The nature of the terrain means that there are plenty of natural jibs and side jumps scattered across the mountain, enough to keep most snowboarders happy.

It is also possible to try cross-country skiing in Bansko; the resort maintains 9kms of Nordic skiing pistes.

Accommodation In Bansko

The majority of the accommodation in Bansko is family run, this means that you can easily find affordable three and four star hotel rooms in the resort. However, if you prefer to go self-catering you can because there are several apartment blocks dotted around the town. Standards are generally high, you get great value for money when you stay here unlike some of the French equivalents.
Most of the hotels offer half or full board deals and the food is normally very good. Some will also pack you a lunch to enjoy while you are on the slopes.
Apres Ski In Bansko

This means that even if you are staying in self-catering accommodation you can still enjoy a dip in a heated indoor pool or Jacuzzi.

There is also a good choice of bars, restaurants and clubs in the town. The Lion pub is always popular with the British crowd and Harry’s Bar is the place to go for live music and a party atmosphere.

When it comes to eating out you are really spoilt for choice, there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants located in the town. Le Retro cafe serves mainly French food and it is very popular with the locals as well as holidaymakers.
