Ski Holidays In Avoriaz

Avoriaz is located in the centre of the Portes du Soleil ski area, in France. It is a relatively new, purpose built resort that features pedestrian only streets, which means you can take a horse drawn sleigh ride to get to your hotel or apartment. That provides you with a great photo opportunity and a unique way to start your holiday.

The resort is known primarily for being a family friendly place to ski. There is no doubt that it is a good destination for families, but it also has plenty to offer those who like challenging runs and a lively après ski scene.

It is located close to Geneva airport, so the transfer takes just an hour and a half, which makes Avoriaz a good destination for weekend skiers. The fact that there is so much self-catering accommodation available means that a few days skiing here is also very reasonably priced.

Skiing In Avoriaz

This resort offers something for every type of skier. For families, it is a particularly good ski resort. The Village des Enfants is a purpose built leisure and ski centre that is Jeunesse & Sport approved. That means Avoriaz is a great place for your children to learn to ski or snowboard and with lessons available from the age of three, everyone can get involved. A parent’s school has now been opened near the Village des Enfants, which enables you to stay close while your children learn to ski.

Whilst for beginners Avoriaz is a great place to learn, for those expert skiiers Avoriaz also ticks all the boxes. There are plenty of challenging pistes dotted throughout the resort, including mogul fields, runs with steep and long descents, testing forest runs and almost 30km of cross-country to explore.

For snowboarders, well the resort was the first one in France to set up a dedicated terrain park, for boarders, and they have continued to innovate. There are all kinds of jumps, rails, boxes, pipes and trick features to enjoy in the 500m long La Chapelle Park, and plenty of others scattered throughout the other three parks. It is also possible to try freestyle skiing in Avoriaz, which you can even do so alongside the professionals during the annual Pipe Ground Festival, which is held in April.

Generally the resort has a good snow record, with 200 snow cannons in operation the resort has a good percentage of the pistes staying open throughout the season.

Regarding lift passes; if you just get a local lift pass you will get access to the local runs only. If you want more variety you would need to purchase a Portes du Soleil Ski Pass which will give you access to 280 runs across 12 villages, covering a total of approximately 600km.

Apres Ski In Avoriaz

Avoriaz is not the liveliest resort out there but there are still plenty of pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs to enjoy. On the slopes, the Cookie Cafe is a popular stop-off for snacks and drinks and Le Yeti is great for après ski fun. The Le Tavaillon Bar is popular with sports fans who want to enjoy British style drinks and food. Le Bowling Bar offers more than just the usual pub games and has table football, billiards and bowling lanes. When it comes to food there is a great range of options, Changabang is good for burgers and other American classics. One of the most popular restaurants is L’Etage, which specialises in French and Swiss cuisine, but also offers other European favourites. Les Fontaines Blanches is the place to go if you want a bit of fine dining and traditional French food.

There is so much to see and do in Avoriaz that it is hard to know where to start. The resort has invested a lot of money into providing a good après ski experience. Aquariaz is an example of this, a faux jungle is dotted with pools, including a shallow area for the little ones to enjoy. There are also geysers and other water features which are fun and provide a way to ease your aching limbs. For the more active, there is also ice-skating, sledging, helicopter tours and snowmobiling to enjoy.

In April, the resort holds it’s Pipe Ground Festival, when the half pipe is transformed into an area for freestyle skiers. The festival attracts pro-skiers who wow the crowds with demonstrations and competitions. If you want to give pro-skiing a go, you can do so and learn alongside the best freestylers in the world.
