There's going to be a new look aquatic and sports centre in Val Thorens! The current sports centre will be restructured and extended to around 4000m². It will be in the shape of a snowboard, to match the reputation of being the “coolest resort” in the world. It will be easily recognisable! It's planned to be a multi-purpose space and used all year round. It will host concerts, a Christmas village, an ice rink and an open-air cinema.

 

The sustainability and environmental issues of the Val Thorens sports centre extension has been at the forefront of their minds when designing the extension. This includes the fact that they’re using the same land so as to not take up more land than necessary. They're using renewable energy where possible for building as well as the running. They are also using high level materials to ensure low sound levels of sound pollution to the local area. The central hall's windows will be 360 degrees, so the entire area will allow for as much natural light as possible. This will help reduce the need for energy to be used for lights etc.

 

Whilst the timeframe for the building work of the Val Thorens sports centre extension is slightly restricted due to weather conditions and being operative during the Winter season, the timetable is scheduled as below.

 

March 2021 – Asbestos removal/cleaning

April/May 2021 – Deconstruction

May to November 2021 – Earthworks and structural work

December 2021 – November 2022 – Finishing work

End of November 2022 – Delivery of the new sports center

 

Of course, covid could slow things down. However work has already started and progress is being made. We’re excited to see how the Val Thorens sports centre extension turns out!
