Les Balcons de Val Thorens… why we think it’s great!

Les Balcons de Val Thorens is one of our best-selling accommodations, and we see a lot of returning guests each season. We have a strong relationship with this accommodation (some of our staff have even worked with this accommodation when doing a season in Val Thorens) and work closely with them to ensure incredible value trips.

The accommodation

Les Balcons de Val Thorens comprises of 4* chalet-style apartments that can cater from between 2 and 18 people. If your group is bigger than this, we can look at two apartments for the group. The accommodation is located at the top of the resort, around a 10-minute walk into the resort centre, giving you the benefit of a quiet night sleep out of the hustle and bustle of the centre but without being far away from the action.

These spacious apartments, designed to feel like a chalet with their wooden interior, give you everything that you could need for your week away from home. Each apartment features a lounge area, fully functional kitchen, a number of bathrooms and bedrooms and most apartments also feature a balcony.

The on-site facilities in this accommodation are amazing and are often a huge draw for our guests! Your stay would include free access to the spa facilities including indoor swimming pool (with a stunning view of the mountain), saunas, and hot tubs as well as the option to book additional spa treatments, a great way to relax after a hard day skiing. It also means that this accommodation is a great option for those that have non-skiers in the group.

Another huge benefit of this accommodation is that it is ski-in/ski-out, via the Plein Sud blue slope, which makes life so much easier (no one likes a long walk at the end of the day in ski boots). There is a turn off to the apartments which does feature quite a steep red run for around 100m, so beginners might prefer to continue on Plein Sud and take advantage of the free shuttle bus service which runs around resort. This service runs 8am-8pm, every 20 minutes, and there’s a stop directly outside the residence. The accommodation actually sits on the run back from La Folie Douce, so if you do have weary legs from all that dancing (or biere peches) you don’t have far to go!

Les Balcons de Val Thorens has a number of underground parking spaces available for those that are looking to drive to resort. These are limited so we strongly suggest booking this in advance.

Other features to mention are free wi-fi available in apartments, a private ski locker for your apartment, wood for your log burner (if your apartment has one) and beds made on arrival.

The catering

This accommodation is probably the best value catered option in Val Thorens. The accommodation is available self-catered (there is a mini-market within the residence), B&B, dinners only, half-board or even full-board. Meals would be served in the on-site restaurant, l’Auberge des Balcons, which is actually ranked 4th out of all Val Thorens on Tripadvisor.

Breakfasts would be buffet-style with hot options available. Your evening meal would consist of 3 courses and there would be 1 night of specialty meals (eg. Raclette or fondue) during the week. Unlike chalets, there would be no missed evening meals during the week (so no extra food cost that you’d need to factor in). If you were to opt for the full-board option, lunches could be eaten in the restaurant or taken as a pack-up to have up the mountain. The restaurant is well-equipped to cater to most food allergies/intolerances but do please check with us before booking so we can confirm with the accommodation.

Another positive of the on-site catering at Les Balcons de Val Thorens is that you aren’t restricted to a set mealtime, as you are with a chalet. You are free to eat in the restaurant whenever it is open (7:30-10:00 for breakfast and 18:30-21:30 for evening meals), which is great if you get back from après a little late or fancy a lie-in in the morning.

There is also the option at Les Balcons de Val Thorens, of adding on the drinks package for £50pp. This would give you 2 drinks with each evening meal (beer, house wine, soft drinks) which works out significantly cheaper than you would normally be able to get in a top French ski resort!

The resort

Val Thorens is a great resort that sits within the Three Valleys ski area, which is one of the largest ski areas in the world with over 600km of pistes! Val Thorens itself has a good range of different coloured pistes, meaning there is something for everyone. The resort is the highest in Europe, sitting at 2300m, which really helps with snow levels, and means that you are able to ski from November all the way through to late April. Val Thorens is also well-known for its great nightlife and après, both on and off the mountain. Take a look at our Val Thorens resort page here to learn a little more about the resort.
